Ohio two U.S. senators are pushing for trade protections that they maintain are key to saving a big piece of the steel industry in Ohio. WKSU’s M.L. Schultze has more.



Republican Sen. Rob Portman and Democrat Sherrod Brown don’t often see eye-to-eye. But one big exception involves Chinese imports.  And the two are leading a group of senators pushing the U.S. Commerce Department to continue antidumping duties of imports of Chinese steel tubes.

Konecranes Wins Order for 24 Steel Mi...

Finnish company Konecranes has been awarded a landmark order for 24 steel mill cranes by Chinese group Tianjin Pipe (Group) Corporation for its new TPCO America seamless steel pipe manufacturing facility near Gregory in Texas in USA.


The industrial and port crane manufacturer will supply seven custom engineered cranes, including two hot metal ladle cranes, a tundish (funnel used in steel making) crane, two magnet scrap handling cranes and two magnet billet cranes to the melt shop, ranging in capacity from 40 to 180 tonnes. A further two smaller CXT maintenance cranes will also be supplied to the melt shop.

Tianhuai starts biggest PQF® Plant

After a construction period of around two years, Jiangsu Tianhuai Steel Pipe from Jiangsu Province (Eastern China) recently commissioned the new 20” PQF® tube rolling plant supplied by SMS Meer for seamless quality steel tubes and rolled the first tube.



The new PQF® plant is the biggest continuous rolling plant in the world and can produce seamless tubes with diameters up to 508 mm.   The plant has a production capacity of 500,000 t/year.


Tianhuai is a joint venture between the state-owned Tianjin Pipe Group Corporation (TPCO) and Huaigang Special Steel, a subsidiary of the Eastern Chinese Shagang Group.

OJSC Taganrog Metallurgical Works (Tagmet), part of OJSC Pipe Metallurgical Company (TMK), plans in February to supply Gazprom with a text consignment of pipe for the South Stream project, Tagmet's technical director, Vasily Mulchin, reported to the press.



The test consignment will amount to 600 tonnes of pipe with diameters from 114 to 168 millimeters.  This consignment will be made from special steel with determined requirements as to corrosion, casting, and heat-treatment, considering the pipe will be laid on the seabed.

Tenaris SA's third-quarter earnings rose 34% as the Luxembourg-based steel-tube maker reported stronger sales driven by increased demand in North and South America.

Vallourec, one of the world's largest makers of steel tubes for the energy market, said it has produced its first pipes at its new mill in Youngstown.
