Unison has received an order from Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS), the supplier of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and one of two shipbuilders of nuclear-powered submarines for the US Navy, for an all-electric CNC machine capable of bending large-bore tubing and piping up to eight inches in diameter (219mm OD). The machine will be the first of its type ever built, extending the shipbuilder’s range of precision software-controlled bending facilities to include fabrication of larger diameter pipes that previously could only be bent on very high torque hydraulic machines. Unison believes that it will be the largest and most sophisticated all-electric pipe bender ever designed.

A Jacksonville company is expanding and hopes to revive an American industry  along the way.  Nuflo, located on Evergreen Avenue  in Florida, is entering a joint venture with the  German company KME to produce copper-nickel pipe for ships, oil rigs and other  marine uses.

John Licausi, president of Nuflo, said the venture will have about 12  employees when production begins at the beginning of next year, with salaries  ranging from $40,000 to $100,000. Eventually, he hopes to grow it to 40 or 50  employees.

JFE Steel Corp. announced May 16 that it will establish a joint venture in China with Kawasaki Kokan Co., Marubeni-Itochu Steel Inc. and Taiwan's Shuan Hwa Industrial Co. to manufacture small-diameter welding pipes and cold drawn steel pipes for automotive parts makers.

The new company, Jiaxing JFE Precision Steel Pipe Co., in Zhejiang, in eastern China, will manufacture and sell high-quality steel pipes in China to meet the on-site procurement needs of automotive parts makers.

Following the rather sharp reduction in EU steel tube production in 2012, with total output falling by 6% preliminary data for Q1-2013 activity show a continued decline. Spain based seamless stainless steel pipe producer Tubacex has announced its financial results for the first quarter of the current year. Net profit totaled EUR 3.53 million in the given quarter, tripling the net profit registered in the corresponding quarter of 2012.The company's sales revenues increased by 7.6% YoY to EUR 145.51 million in the Q1 this year, with a significant increase in the sale of high value added products for oil and gas exploration and extraction and for power generation. Liaoning Province-based Chinese company Zhongyou Tipo Group has signed a cooperation agreement with Liaoning-based Dongbao Group Shipbuilding Co. to build a new steel pipe production facility in Huludao, Liaoning, as announced by the Liaoning provincial authorities on April 16.

The total investment in the project in question, which will be built on a site covering 54 hectares, will amount to RMB 5 billion ($803.9 million). Construction will commence in the current year and be completed within five years.
