An oil tube manufacturer plans to open a $12.1 million plant in New Carlisle and use locally made steel.

Tejas Tubular Products Inc. will heat-treat and manufacture well casings for the oil and gas industry at its new factory. The company is moving into a vacant building in St. Joseph County, and setting up an operation that will be able to produce 72,000 tons of casing annually.

Chicago-based supplier Independence Tube will furnish the plant with tubing that it will upgrade into a more finished, higher-quality product, and the steel should primarily come from ArcelorMittal, said Darrell Ballinger, vice president of sales and marketing for Tejas Tubular. JMC Steel Group, the largest independent steel pipe and tube manufacturer in  North America and parent company of Wheatland Tube, celebrated two years in  Chicago with a guided plant tour, luncheon and visit from Mayor Rahm Emanuel on  Monday, September 16, at the South Side Wheatland Tube manufacturing  facility.

Mayor Emanuel gave a speech highlighting Wheatland Tube's contribution to  local economic growth, after remarks from JMC's CEO, Barry Zekelman, who spoke  to the company's role in strengthening Chicago's workforce. Guests were then  invited to take guided tours of the plant.

A steelmaking company based in Dubai has chosen Buffalo for development of a new $102 million plant that will employ an estimated 172 workers.

Officials confirmed that Alita USA Holdings Inc. will construct a nearly 350,000-square-foot plant on a 30-acre site Rittling Boulevard in South Buffalo, an area near the former Republic Steel plant.  Alita selected Buffalo over Houston.

Marubeni-Itochu Steel Inc. agreed to buy Sooner Inc., the largest U.S. distributor of pipes for the oil and gas industry, for $600 million to tap the benefits of increased energy output in the U.S.

The Tokyo-based venture between Japan’s third-largest trading house Itochu Corp. (8001) and its fifth-largest Marubeni Corp. (8002) will gain access to Sooner’s five main U.S. supply bases and its clients, from multinational oil majors to independent producers, Marubeni-Itochu said in a statement today.
